Manage Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) from a Client computer
Published : 2016-04-07.
Last updated : 2017-05-02.
You can administer AD DS from a client computer by
using RSAT. You need to use
RSAT for Windows 8® in Windows Server 2012, and RSAT for Windows 8.1® in Windows Server 2012 R2.
Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows® 7 with SP1 enables IT administrators
to manage roles and features that are installed on computers that are running Windows
Server® 2008 R2, Windows Server® 2008, or Windows Server® 2003, from a remote
computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows 7 with SP1. RSAT for Windows 7®
will not allow you to administer AD DS in Windows Server 2012 or in Windows Server 2012 R2.
Installation of the Remote Server Administration Tools
After you download the RSAT installation files from the Microsoft website, run the
Setup Wizard, which takes you through the installation. After you install RSAT, you must turn on the tool or tools that you want
to use. To do this, in Control Panel, on the Programs And Features category page, use Turn Windows Features On or Off.
Find the RSAT downloads here.
Read more on the RSAT tools, and the functional comparison in support matrix
here in the wiki.
