The Command line command VER will not show you if you run Windows 8.1 Update 1

Using the Windows Command Line command VER only shows you:

C:\>VER

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600]

This shows you it is Windows 8.1.
The graphical Windows program WinVer will show you:

The Graphical Windows Version program WinVer shows it is version 8.1

Still no sign if you are running update 1. Microsoft in its Technet pages states: "If you see a search button next to your account picture in the upper-right corner, you are running Windows 8.1 Update or Windows RT 8.1 Update." .

The Windows 8.1 start screen will show a search button (denoted with the red frame) if you are running Windows 8.1 Update 1.
